Smart Money Smart Kids by Dave Ramsey and Rachel CruzeI love reading! But like most people, I don’t usually enjoy books about finances because many of them are so serious and only focused on the numbers rather. Despite my feelings of reserve, I thought I’d give this book a try. Dave Ramsey is a #1 New York Times Bestselling author, after all, and the fact that he co-wrote this book with his daughter is really neat. Immediately after starting their book, Smart Money Smart Kids, I knew this book was different than other financial books I’ve read in the past. I knew it had valuable information that I could use, but I did not expect it to have such a big impact on me and my life. This book has completely changed my views on finances. In fact, if I had a time machine, I’d go back in time and give this book to my parents in hopes it would prevent many of the mistakes I made in my early 20’s! As a new parent, I want to make good decisions. I understand how important it is to set my children up for a successful future and I hope to teach them tools and skills that will allow them to succeed in life without having to learn many lessons the hard way like I did. As I approach 30, I find these kinds of topics much more interesting than I did in the past. Having two little boys just makes it that much more important.

As many would expect, this book is very well-written. It’s easy to follow along with Dave and Rachel’s points of view as each time they switch, it shows who is writing. While it’s difficult to consolidate an entire 18 years of parenting tips into a single book, this book does exactly that. They cover finances from each milestone from birth and toddler years all the way through college and beyond. Each section shares expert advice that really works and is applicable to that stage of life. Throughout the book, personal stories and experiences that relate to each stage are carefully interwoven making it very relatable and also interesting.

Although I had heard of Dave Ramsey, I was not familiar with his story. He shares that him and his wife, in their late 20’s, were faced with financial despair and were forced to file for bankruptcy during a time when they had a toddler and a new baby. That hit home for me because Drew and I are in a similar age range with a toddler and new baby also. We are thankful that God has provided us with opportunities to make a living but are also very aware that things can always change in an instant. Hearing how they got through that and build their lives back together in way that their children never knew what it was like to struggle was very inspiring. I enjoy hearing stories of people who build their dream lives from literally nothing.

Much of the financial advice shared by Dave and Rachel is very common-sense information you’d think people would already know. I was amazed at how easy much of this was to follow and surprised by the things that I didn’t previously know. I really feel like there should be more financial education in our country because sadly, some people never learn about how to win with money until it’s too late.

There are so many helpful tips and advice throughout this book that we will be able to apply to our lives and most importantly, our children’s lives, in order to raise them with a secure financial future. I highly recommend this book to all parents regardless of your financial situation. The practical advice in this book can apply to many different situations from teaching children the value of money up to buying a house with cash. Dave and Rachel have something for everyone! If you want to learn how to win with money, or how to make your money grow, read this book!
