If you’ve ever gone on a road trip with small children, chances are you have heard the infamous question, “Are we there yet?” at least a few dozen times. But you don’t have to leave your home or classroom to get some variation of this question. “How much longer?” At a young age, before children understand the concept of time or how to read a clock, they just know they are waiting for something that hasn’t happened yet and it can be quite confusing and frustrating for them just as it may be for you.I’ve partnered with Stoplight Golight to bring you a solution!
Just like clocks provide a visual cue for adults, the Stoplight Golight Timer provides a visual cue for children. It works great in the home or classroom to teach children about waiting. They don’t have to ask a grown up, they can determine the answer all by themselves by the color of the light. Red lights indicate a waiting period, while green lights indicate that the waiting period is over!
The Stoplight Golight was invented by a mompreneur team of sisters to help teach young children about managing time for bedtime/wake time, timeouts, and nap time as well as managing activities like cleaning, screen time, getting ready for school, and more. This product is ideal for moms to use at home or teachers to use in the classroom.
The product is designed to look like a stoplight and is super cute! The yellow light is for aesthetics but does not function. Along the top are the buttons used to control the device. You can set the device for minutes, hours, or both (example, 1 hour 15 minutes). There’s a little trick to setting the timer so that little fingers can’t turn it off 🙂 The Stoplight Golight Timer uses batteries OR an AC adapter can also be used. Batteries are not included but the AC adapter is included. The instructions included inside the box are very helpful with explaining how to get started using the product.
Here are a few examples of the Stoplight Golight Timer in use:
Do your little ones like to wake up at 6am? I don’t know about you, but that’s really early in our home. We’d prefer the boys sleep until 8 or 9. The idea behind Stoplight Golight is it will help Andrew (our 4 year old early riser) understand when it’s “too early” to wake up, so he can go back to sleep and wake up at a better time. The sun rises on his side of the house so his room will lighten up before ours. He doesn’t always understand that it’s too early to wake up. But with the Stoplight Golight Timer, he just has to look at the stop light! If it’s red, he can close his eyes a bit longer. If it’s green, it means Good Morning! It’s such a great, simple, yet fun, idea that gives kids a bit of independence and takes the stress out of time for mom and dad.
Whether you have your children move from activities in stations (building time, puzzle time, art time, reading time, etc.) or you are working together to clean the playroom, the Stoplight Golight is great for indicating how long an activity will last for. After you use it a couple times, they really get the hang of it. It’s also great because the timer can be the bad guy. It’s not mommy saying, “keep cleaning!” without an end in sight for them. It’s mommy saying, “We’ll clean together until the light is green. What color is it?”
Time outs are just a reality when you have little ones. We usually do 5-15 minutes depending on the act that resulted in discipline, but the actual timing process was us just checking the clock or, occasionally, me asking Siri to set an alarm. However, with the Stoplight Golight Timer, it’s SO much easier for kids to understand if they need to keep waiting or if they can get up. Allowing them to be part of the process in a way they understand makes time out time MUCH more manageable for us and a little easier for them since they have a constant visual.
Note: No children were upset during the making of this blog post 🙂

About the Creators:
The Stoplight Golight Timer is a patented product created by two moms who happen to be sisters, Whitney and Courtney! I will let Whitney share with you how it came to be:
I had 2 year old twins and a newborn and was desperately trying to get my
twins on a sleep schedule. One day at a stoplight one of my twins said,
“Momma, red means stop and green means go!” At that point, Courtney and I
realized that was how we were going to get Brecken and Gavin to stay in
bed and know when to get up.
Now, we had to implement the plan. I knew I couldn’t do this by myself so
Courtney decided to partner with me on this journey. Well, not so much
decided as I told her we were going to do this. Big sisters can always
talk their little sisters into anything 🙂
The Stoplight Golight worked for bedtimes and we quickly found out that it
worked for other things as well such as potty training, brushing teeth,
reading – anything task oriented. For example, brushing their teeth –
simply set the timer for one minute. The light turns red and your child
knows they need to STOP and FOCUS on the task at hand (brushing their
teeth). When light turns green they know they can GO and move on to next
Since my kids are older they didn’t use the Stoplight Golight timer from
the beginning, but Courtney’s kids have always used the Stoplight Golight
timer and so have my nephew and niece. In fact, since they have all grown
up with the timer, they would remind their parents to set it each night
and naptime so they knew when they could get out of bed. It truly has
